Biblical Series VI: The Psychology of the Flood

The story of Noah and the Ark is next in the Genesis sequence. This is a more elaborated tale than the initial creation account, or the story of Adam and Eve or Cain and Abel. However, it cannot be understood in its true depth without some investigation into what the motif of the flood means, psychologically, and an analysis of how that motif is informed by the order/chaos dichotomy, as well as by the idea of an involuntary voyage to the underworld or confrontation with the dragon. In consequence, this lecture concentrates almost exclusively on psychology: How is an encounter with the unknown to be understood, conceptually? How and why is that represented with themes such as the underworld voyage, the dragon fight, or the flood?
All that constitutes the theme of lecture VI.

  • This lecture series reignited my desire to try in life. In a very dark place, this series was a shining light that gave me hope. I was able to refocus and critically think about my life goals, and slowly work towards them. I'm still in the darkness, as I fell deep, very deep, as a result of my own shortcomings, and due to "toxic family,". I hope through my efforts, I'll overcome the darkness entirely. Until then, wish me luck 😓 God bless Jordan Peterson and his family for generations to come

  • I mostly like what Jordan Peterson has to say, but this biblical series..... The ancient Hebrews were unsophisticated nomads. The biblical stories were incorporated into their doctrine because they conveyed the right moral, mostly to children. I think Prof. Peterson dramatically overcomplicates these stories in this series. I really don't see convoluted psychological lessons being important in history either, especially with the masses. Sure, theologians made something deep out of a lot of Bible passages, but few could read their work, much less consider it. I like Jordan Peterson, but I don't think these biblical lectures enhance much.

  • I can’t help but think that he sometimes says things to either avoid criticism from his largely secular evolutionary believing audience or rather not to be viewed as among the biblical literal believers. But it seems absurd for him to believe or claim, assuming that if it really was an all knowing omniscient omnipotent creator who created time and this physical universe, and who would exist both in & outside of this physical realm, that he would be bound or constrained in his creations by time that he created, so that it would take him hundreds of billions of years to accomplish his physical works in whatever that may be. If he was, then he wouldn’t be all powerful or all knowing, and the entire concept would be just that, a concept conjured up by man’s imagination, and would also be little more than an interesting piece of literature for discussion. It’s either one or the other but I can’t see it being both, and I doubt he really does either, he’s far too smart, or so deeply indoctrinated into believing evolution that it circumvented part of his considerable intellectual genius.

  • When the audience laughs when JP is unsure of the correct term for west coast Indians - I feel like you wasted your money. All this is over your head. Notice JP is only jovial once or twice, he’ll jump on a jovial reaction from the audience to further elaborate an idea but he totally was like f### this is where the media keeps getting right wingers; people say they understand him but they don’t. JP is too particular with his words and rarely um’s so for him to be unsure for a brief moment is humility and humanity, not humorous.

  • Jordan Peterson, you attempt to absolutely discredit the Bible by claiming 3.5 billion years of evolution, instead of the simple truth any child receives from the Scriptures; that the earth was created by God in 6 literal days and is only 6,000 years old. A 2.5 hour lecture costing many thousands of dollars is worse than a waste since, in utter foolish futility, you defiantly defecate on the Bible and yet strive to dazzle and deceive your drooling audience by 'explaining it' with fancy language and 'sophisticated' philosophy. Repent. Your motive to mix evolution and the Bible is inspired by satan. Without child-like humility and biblical faith, all the elegant oration in the universe is a sour stench of secret satanism.

  • Looking forward to the day when JP comes to understand that the Bible is not myth - that it is the story of actual redemption for actual fallen man offered by the actual living God through the historical life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God. The Bible is not a Jungian, archetypal, human psychology book. Yes, it is the most wisdom-filled book in the entire world, and no one can ever completely plumb the entirety of the depths of its truth. However, it expressly and clearly proclaims that man cannot save himself, but that there is only one person who can. That person is Jesus, the Redeemer. Yes, the Bible teaches the way to live righteously, and Jordan Peterson is skilled at gleaning and sharing some of its truths. Nevertheless, the Holy Scriptures offer a new life in Christ, Jesus, though one’s actual true faith and trust in his Person and work. You see, the Bible is clear. All are dead in trespasses and sin, yet are also promised a new life when our trust is placed in the life-giving Person and work of Jesus. This is the important dividing line between Christianity and ALL other religions. The Bible teaches that salvation comes only through trust/faith in Jesus and that faith is a gift from God. One cannot earn one’s salvation. All other religions essentially direct one’s path of salvation by way of earning one’s merit and hoping for approval from some made-up god or from the “universe” or some such hopeless belief. These are false. Only one Person has earned salvation for the many, and that person is Jesus, the Christ, and all glory and honor and praise for anyone’s salvation belongs to Him, for you can do nothing to save yourself from the Judgement that is coming to all sinners who are not found in Him on that day. The Bible will guide you into righteousness. That is good. But do not presume to think it just another book of wisdom among the rest. The Bible reveals to all that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and that NO ONE comes to God except through Him. There is no other way by which man can be saved except through Jesus. The Bible is alive. It is the Truth. I pray that you read it and come to true faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God is good. He has made a way for your salvation from the punishment due you because of your sin. If you are not already a believer, the Bible clearly says you are dead in your sin. You are liable to God’s Judgement and to be cast into eternal punishment when you physically die. The Bible says, “Whosoever calls upon the Lord shall be saved.” Trust Him. Live that new life as can only be given you by Him. Thank you, Mr. Peterson, for sharing your understanding of Scripture. May God continue to bless you and your family and those you touch through your teaching. Read the Bible not from the perspective of humanistic, secular psychology which falsely believes we evolved from a lobster. But read it as it is intended to be read - as the true story of the Creation of time, space and matter and all living things - of the creation of man, of his fall into sin and the resulting curse of separation from God and spiritual and physical death - and of the promise from God of redemption and restoration of a people unto life and to Himself through the Person and work of Jesus, the Christ.

  • People mistakenly think Jordan Peterson is a Christian. He indicates in this video that he does not understand Christianity at all. The Bible is allegory to him in the same way ancient mythology is. Around 1:09 he says “there’s an idea in the New Testament that the sin against the Holy Ghost is the one sin that can’t be forgiven. No one knows what the hell that means; maybe it doesn’t mean anything.” Then he proceeds to tell us what he thinks it means on a philosophical level. Every Christian knows what it means and it is the overarching principle in the Bible. The Holy Spirit testifies to Christ and to sin against the Spirit is to deny that Jesus is the Christ and savior of mankind. Peterson has read and studied the Bible as a philosopher thinking it was written by man and is pulling the wisdom out of the stories contained therein. He is not reading it as a believer knowing it was written by the Holy Spirit and soaking up the story of redemption by Jesus Christ. That approach is still useful for living this life successfully but it doesn’t have eternal value. Hope that helps Christians understand Jordan Peterson better.
