Russell Brand & Jordan B Peterson - Under the Skin #52

Russell Brand talked with me in London. This was our second conversation (the first was in LA a few months ago: dehave.info/down/nYFmYtqynpi4yYI/video). I thought we had a good discussion then, but I think this one was better. We met in London about two weeks ago (in mid May 2018). I was completely worn out by the end :)

  • The Persian and Mongol empires allowed freedom of speech in the area of religion long before England did.

    Simon WoodSimon WoodVor 5 Tage
  • You might call freedom of speech “the paramount right”, but without life , we cannot have freedom of speech, nor any other right. So let’s prioritise the right to life. E.g. let’s end violence and let’s ensure a decent living standard for everyone, so no one dies from lack of clean water, lack of good, lack of housing, lack of healthcare, etc..

    Simon WoodSimon WoodVor 5 Tage
  • I like regulation because I prefer that we, the people, use our democratic govts to manage our economy instead of the few people who own businesses managing our economy.

    Simon WoodSimon WoodVor 5 Tage
  • “Making [taking] as much money as I can” is not healthy. That is a addiction to money and also produces capitalism’s dog-eat-dog culture, inequality and poverty. It’s much healthier to focus on MAKING EVERYONE AS HAPPY AS WE CAN - which requires enjoying what we have (not thinking we will only be happy later when we are richer) and also only doing sustainable economic development, not development which trashes the natural ecosystem that we rely on for survival and happiness.

    Simon WoodSimon WoodVor 5 Tage
  • Jordan Peterson claims that the most effective way to minimise the harm of capitalism is by getting individuals to be more healthy in their purchasing choices. That is what corporations advocate. Sorry, but I don’t trust corporations to advocate what is most effective for human health. Corporations are motivated by whatever maximises their profits, regardless of how much harm that does to humanity. Compared with that impotent method, socialist govts are much more effective in making our economy work to benefit humanity with traditional regulations. Socialism also creates a new, more conscious, more compassionate human being of the kind that Jordan Peterson says “is the most effective way to regulate economies”.

    Simon WoodSimon WoodVor 5 Tage
  • Planned economics enabled the USSR to go from a country of peasants to an economic superpower in only a few decades, enabling them to defeat 80% of nazi Germany’s military in WW2, to send the first satellite into space, the first man into space, the first woman into space, invent LEDs and mobile phones, etc.,etc.. Planned economics enabled China to go from a country of peasants dominated by foreign powers to the world’s top economy within a few decades, lifting 800+ million people out of poverty.

    Simon WoodSimon WoodVor 5 Tage
  • We can have a competency hierarchy without paying more money to people who are more competent. People can do things because they are passionate about those things regardless of the money. I do much of my political activism out of love for humanity and no one pays me anything to do activism. Indeed, I’d prefer to have a doctor or therapist or teacher who works in their field because they love helping people rather than one who is there to get rich.

    Simon WoodSimon WoodVor 5 Tage
  • Hierarchies are not instinctual, not mere evolution. The existence of hierarchy (or lack of it) is linked with the economic system. We humans lived as hunter-gatherers in a system of primitive communism for most of the past 2 million years. In that system, we were much more equal and practiced much more democratic decision-making than we do in capitalist countries today.

    Simon WoodSimon WoodVor 5 Tage
  • In my experience, the “men are from Mars, women are from Venus” claims are stereotypes based on common personalities, and they are not true for all people. E.g. my Grandpa was more gentle, kind & nurturing than my Grandma, mother and fiancée and I am Ike my Grandpa in that way. Also, e.g. I do not do paid work but I do unpaid work and I am more supportive and communicative about my emotions than my fiancée, while she is more extroverted and focuses a lot on her career and is less communicative and often like the stereotypical husband who comes home from work and doesn’t want to talk and prefers to just watch TV. That said, I agree with Jordan Peterson that the harm society does to men is ignored by most people. E.g. men get little or no sympathy if “failures” according to capitalist ideology (homeless, etc.) - and I would add that capitalism generates “failures”, because it does not provide enough jobs for everyone, which serves to maximise the profit of individual employers.

  • I'm all for people changing and forgiveness but Russell Brand with his shameless butt plug Ahem I mean Booky Wooky plug ...right at the beginning ....I wonder if he really did all the redemptive work if possible to make it up to all the women he hurt and traumatized during his selfish sex acts...it would be interesting to know......one of the hundreds of Girls literally described feeling almost like she was unable to say No because of how he acted towards her sexually upon bumping into her in public female toilets. Has every so called fan forgotten the disgustingly irresponsible personal hurtful and heartless phonecall him and Jonathan Woss made ( who trusts a man who can't even pronounce his own name and has some sort of sex pad in Tokyo where he invites young Asian Girl's for Ahem company). Do these people ever actually take the Road less traveled and make up for the damage they have done.....and can they.... because that's taking real responsibility and that's real kindness and unselfishness.

  • all peterson does-as far as i've seen - is to reinforce right wing dogma through veiled attacks on the left by using right wing dogma! -right wing dogma sitting on a foundation of spurious propaganda and untruths - the right wing simply cannot explain the political world because they refute marxism - that's like throwing away your toolbox then claiming you can still do your job as an electrician - pandering to this ignorance is only accelerating and expanding the rights already dangerous ignorance - the real and most entrenched dogma comes from the right-yet peterson refuses to call it out - hmm - why?

    2stoneuk2stoneukVor 26 Tage
    • @Joe McNamara i never said jp was racist - in fact you'll find that many racists are scared to be openly racist - but people like trump and other right wing are trying very hard to open up that can of worms and pave the way so that they can feel happy being nasty offensive and ignorant -

      2stoneuk2stoneukVor 6 Tage
    • @Joe McNamara well that's personal taste - but many people are very inspired by george - and he has rightly earned his place as one of the greatest comedians in our culture

    • @2stoneuk woah massive tangent, I agree with we should always have the right to protest as the people choose the government and they are only in power because we put them there, you are pushing current British politics a lot my argument isn't about the right and wrongs of government it's about JP not pushing conspiracy and dogma

      Joe McNamaraJoe McNamaraVor 19 Tage
    • it's important to understand what 'the left' actually is - and many criticisms of the left by the right - show a glaring lack of understanding in this respect - a good example is the uk labour party - the labour party is 'supposed to be' a socialist party - founded to represent the people against the political establishment in their political forum-parliament - but the labour party is flooded with right wingers who are literally-politically- the same as their -supposed- right wing opposition - the conservatives - yet they claim they represent labour - even though they oppose the actual values the party was founded on - currently the leader - keir starmer - is initiating a purge of the left from the party and this is not subtle in the slightest i assure you - meanwhile we have a govt now trying to push through a new police powers bill that will radically undermine freedom to protest and of course - voice dissent against the government - i haven't heard any opposition to this from the right - or the conspiracy crowd - or the loose collective anti maskers - covid conspiracy mongers etc - who were indeed vocal when they felt they were being suppressed themselves - the actual left on the other hand - one exemplar being jeremy corbyn - is very clearly saying what needs to be said about what's happening - every issue-not just this one - which is of course why he was demonised and vilified by not only the establishment media and it's cronies - but also it's cronies within the labour party - so much so that these cronies deliberately undermined labour's election chances - the investigation of which appears to have been silenced by starmer -

      2stoneuk2stoneukVor 19 Tage
    • So would you say modern day is as racist as in the 70s? Goes to show how much society has changed (thank god) I would rather rate people on their competency and ability to act properly in society than their skin tone, and I dont see any evidence that jp is racist at all

The fact that the value of what he says goes over many people's heads (especially those students on the left), is a travesty. This is free to us, but there was a cost for Dr. Peterson; and because of that, I am learning more from him in one sitting, than my entire time in college. So grateful. God bless.

  • the best answer to all of mandkinds ills is to be free to choose, and then consciously choosing the highest purpose. (fundamentally you cannot have morality without being free to choose it) all of our issues can be traced to this issue. its not the systems, its us. changing systems doesnt solve the root cause of the issues which are the sins/flaws of mankind as finite beings, incapable of omnipotence. and the stronger the demons, the more resolute we need to be in our conviction to that philosophical idea. our forfeiture of this idea, our succumbing to our weakness in the face of this new enemy, (the near limitless scope of demons in the digital age) is what has exacerbated every world issue we have and hastened polarities before we've has the chance to properly rationalize where we stand, as finite beings. we've given up, and worse yet assuaged our weaknesses by acquiescing to them. upholding that principle idea is the pinnacle of all governance. (mentally, politically, etc.) ...one that creates the most in-balance societal interplay that can be. *life is always hard when you yourself are not strong*

In basic human dignity, yes, but not educationally or professionally. Brand is fairly well-read and has clearly spent a great deal of time considering what he thinks, but he has no humility. But to be fair, McConaughey was quite similar in the podcast he did with Peterson, and the only major difference is that I like him. Self-knowledge is critical, but flattering less often that we would like. That said, I didn't give McConaughey a pass. I don't know, maybe that speaks middlingly well of me?

It runs terribly counter to alot of what Peterson espouses. OK? So they WON right? But isnt that behavior many of them fall in to ( humans being thing they can buy - screw love - the other is buyable so it doesnt matter) the same that would get lower apes completely annihilated in prison as the lowest of the low - exactly. Yes Peterson you are very flawed and incapable of seeing some of the inverse nature going on here - due to your very strong convictions in defending heirarchy - which have at current - resulted in this terrible inverse relationship of morality. Maybe its not that hierarchies are doomed to develop this inverse morality - maybe there is a way it can be without such - right now mate you look like a bit of a fool regarding this.

  • Amazing conversation by two very learned individuals. I'm a big Jordan Peterson fan because listening to him makes me want to push myself to the outer limits of my bland and boring present mindscape. I literally become a smarter human just by hearing him talk. However, what stood out for me the most in this video was Russell Brand's respect and inclusion for the third person in the room. For the entire conversation, Russell made a clear and concerted effort to also include Jordon's wife in the conversation. He did this by constantly glancing in her direction when he asked or answered questions. I felt like he respected her just as much as Jordon and this suggested the idea of an honest discourse to all present and listening. It also suggested that at the core Russell is a gentleman. I intend to take a look into his online content. I owe him that much. With regards to the vibes and energy between the two men, it was very entertaining.
