  • Yeah you should do a showdown a week. And then have monthly, the. Yearly competition with the monthly winners. Imo, you could definitely drive viewers and produce fun content.

  • Noise is caused by pressure waves which are directly related to the turbulence created by the blades. Using "a" weighting gives a better approximation to what we'll actually hear in terms of loudness so that's positive! What I'm really interested to know from these is not so much how much air these axial designs suck in, but more the turbulence at the output. It seems to me (and please correct me on this if I've gotten this wrong) is that turbulent flow likely to be fairly poor in terms of cooling. I'm a bit late to the party, but an unweighted SPL measure at the output would surely give a better indicator of performance, would it not? I get that you're using a standardized temperature test but it might be neat (in future) to combine a heatsink into the test directly to see the effects of the chaotic flow around the blades. A less chaotic flow (as demonstrated by those "bladeless" fans as Dyson called them with entrained airflow around the duct causes a much more effective surface contact (coanda effect). I guess this is a bit beyond this discussion (it's all over my head, I'm just speculating based on what I've picked up along the way) but I'm sure some of these smart folks could look into that. Seems that at the moment, we're using axial fans a bit like "spray and pray" shooting in a game, with more physics-aware design we surely could improve matters while reducing both noise and energy consumption.

  • Based on a simple calculation if you keep going at the current rate of 4 fans per showdown you would have to produce 350 additional episodes to make it through your current backlog of designs that you already have not including any new submissions at the current rate of production that would take you approximately 6.7 years to process just your current backlog. You may want to look into upping the number of fans that you test in each episode and possible look into making more than 1 episode per week to get through more of the designs that you have in the que just increasing the number of fans to 10 fans per episode would shorten the time down to just over 2 years to get through your current back log.

  • I know your ratings are trying to be more objective these days, but I think it would be best to move towards a 3D spectrogram on the noise analysis. A visual aid displaying the fan noise as a function of spectral density over frequency. This can be done with python's matplotlib... Just a suggestion, keep up the fun content.

  • I actually have a fun, at least fun for you, story to tell about roof turbines. Recently I bought one to put it at the chimney of my koke forge, at first awesome druft bin the I noticed the sweet smell of plastic. As it turns out the cheep chinesium upper bearing carrier was made from thermoplastic plastic. It melted and effectively infused the lowe bearing. Now I replaced it with Aluminium an its fine. And here is an surprisingly stupid Idea, eventually it is possible to passive air cool a system just with radiators placed in a chimney ish pipe, put a roof turbine on it and place it somewhere windy. The draft of my 160 turbine is around comparable with the two 140mm Corsair fans wich came with my case, so maybe It is possible. A interesting an funny video is the result in anyway ;D

  • Maybe someone already said, but regarding the roof turbine: you're doing it wrong. It's backward. Wind drives a turbine that draws air up through the dome. In your test, you had air driving down through the dome. When I was a child, most outhouses at state and federal campgrounds had these things, meant to draw stinky, hot air out of the facility. They were on top of a stack mounted to the roof. They were never intended to draw air down into the building.

  • Whirlybirds as they were called ended up being a redundant eyesore on houses. They only work if there is a breeze which means they only work when they are not needed. Houses are built with vents for the attic so when there is a breeze they efficiently circulate air in your attic as needed.

  • 1400 fans in queue...yea, I'm never getting on. I've submitted one already that turns the 120mm fan into a 140mm fan. I have two more designs ready to go that one works on creating non uniform laminar flow, and the other is based on the Fibonacci spiral but on 3 planes at once.

    James M.James M.Vor 11 Tage
  • The roof turbines were found to be much less efficient than ridge vents as they left hot spots and uneven cooling. The ridge vent gives a laminar air flow that draws fresh air from the soffit vents and pulls it along the bottom of the roof all the way to the top. This not only cools the roof, but it also dries the under layment in humid environments or at times when the roof is seeing condensation.
