Biblical Series XI: Sodom and Gomorrah

Often interpreted as an injunction against homosexuality (particularly by those simultaneously claiming identity as Christians and opposed to that orientation), the stories of the angels who visit Abraham, bless him, and then rain destruction on Sodom and Gomorrah are more truly a warning against mistreatment of the stranger and impulsive, dysregulated, sybaritic conduct.
Abraham opens his heart and hearth to the stranger. The denizens of Lot’s soon-to-be lost cities threaten them with violent rape. God exacts a terrible retribution. The warning is clear.

Like Dr. Peterson, there are thousands of hours of commentary from Dr. Heiser here on DEhave. As Dr. Peterson unravels the advanced psychology of the Old Testament, Dr. Heiser unravels the same material through linguistics, revealing such wonders in the Old Testament text as to create an entirely fresh perspective on the ancient source material. Add Dr. Peterson and Dr. Heiser together, and you are in another realm of understanding altogether.

  • From a person who extremely admires professor Peterson and his work, his understanding with regards to the Christ taking the sins of the world onto Himself is incorrect. I do acknowledge the sinful nature within me. I also acknowledge, that sinful nature comes from the same place where the sinful nature manifested in the Nazi holocaust. However, that specific acknowledgement does not mean that I, as a human being, took the sins of the world onto myself. How can a sinner take other's sin? Can a prisoner take over his inmate's sentence onto him? Can a debtor take over another debtor's financial obligation? Only a sinless person can take the sins of others. Only a wealthy person can take over the debt of others. Only Jesus Christ can take the sin of the world onto Himself.

  • it's funny; Alan. watts, whose a really brilliant popularizer of eastern philosophies used to talk about the silliness of modern westerners abandoning the interesting brilliant traditions of christian thought and that it deserves to be revived. maybe it was Terrence McKenna ANYWAY point being, Jordan Peterson is the PERFECT embodiment of revisiting our own traditions and revealing just how much more there remains to be discovered. modern church leaders would be smart to pay serious attention to this kind of thinking as it will definitely rescue christianity from cold 21st century apathy o0n behalf of the people and irrelevance on behalf of the church as its been applied to American life this past century.

  • Allow me to expand an inherent principle, we are born with some forms of constructs, alignments, beliefs, inhibition's, ignorances, allegiances, precepts, perceptions, etc, passed down through our priori genome, DNA, RNA, over millions of years of evolution. Then we experience either interference's, or encouragement's toward's life. All these are meant for our admonishment, for good. Thus, we are in essence a mirror of [ 2 x 2=4 ] we are a microcosm of the macrocosm. As above so below, this is our mind, consciousness interacting on the mirror of heaven so to say. These interferences or encouragements are an expose of our psyche, for good. 2 x 2=4 is unemotional, equally it is good, yes. When we connect with anything; literature, a modality, like psychology, or art, engineering, this is part and partial of our forms of [ see above ], our 2 x 2=4. As well when we connect on an emotionally encouraging level with our interest, passion etc; we emit another equation, E=MC 2rd. Jordan Peterson is saying something similar, not in a sense directly. We all have the agonizing in some fashion responsibility, to evolute to our higher consciousness potential, this is expounded in our dictionaries as well. I use the Mariam Websters, and Eric Partridge etymological dictionaries. I love Jordan Peterson, you give so much data so quickly, makes it a good challenge to imbibe it all in.

  • Notice the story about the three angels that met with Abraham. They told Sarah she would have son named Isaac Genesis 18: 2So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, 3and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. Genesis 18: 20And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, 21I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.” 22Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Notice how many angels went down to Sodom? Genesis 19: 1Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. 2And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the open square.” 3But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. 4Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 5And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally. What happened to third angel. John 8: 52Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ 53Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?” 49Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.” 54Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. 55Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. 56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” 59Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. • The practice of circumcision is not original with Abraham as noted by Dr Peterson and fact it was prohibited in the Pentateuch. It is not known if ancients in the times pierced their foreskin as a form of worship of the pagan gods? If you removed the foreskin? You could not do this practice anymore. Was that the point? Eliminating this practice? Leviticus 19: 27You shall not shave around the sides of your head, nor shall you disfigure the edges of your beard. 28You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.” It was a practice in antiquity to cut themselves to worship their pagan gods. 1Kings 18: 27And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.” 28So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. 29And when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention. Mayan Kings were known to pierce the foreskin as form of worship of the gods. There is some iconographic evidence, Stemp and colleagues add, that women also indulged in ritual bloodletting, although it was mostly a male business. It was also sanctioned, and practised, at the highest levels of Maya society. “Based on artwork, male rulers would pierce or cut the foreskin or glans of the penis with obsidian blades, stingray spines, and bone shards/needles,” the researchers write. “After use of the blades in ritual, the Maya men left them in the caves, thus returning them as gifts along with the blood back to the earth or ‘Earth Lords’.”

  • Dr Peterson said he like personal human antidotes. My brother was never religious far from it. He was a confirmed atheist. His life style from teen age on was rebellious. A Party boy, drugs, alcohol and free sex. He became a punk rocker. He even was a room mate of Courtney Love-Cobain. He continued in his down ward spiral. He was deforced with a child. He depended on alcohol and his parents until he was 42. When they passed way. I told him your on your own. You better figure this out. He was slowly gravitating to Christianity before the parents passed away but still had the alcohol problem. When the passed and gave him the tuff love message he needed. He turned his life around and remarried with my approval. He knew I would not approve if he was going to destroy another woman’s life. Since then he became a minister and pastor of a small congregation. I never gave up hope, prayed for and God answers. Sometimes some people have to hit bedrock or bottom of the abyss to figure out life. The find there is only one way out of the pit. It is to climb up and reach to the heaven for an answer.

  • After watching again, this time around I found very interesting (you can watch this 100 times and always find interest) was on the section where God tells Abraham that he will bless both he and his wife with a child. Although Abraham burst out in laughter @min 36:10 of the video text 17:17 God took not in offence, however when Sara also laughed @min 1:13:00 of text 18:12 God took offense. The difference being that Abraham bursts out in laughter in frint of the Lord and said in his his heart his disbelief that at the age of 100 and Sarah 99 to be with child. Sarah on the other hand laughed not in front of the Lord, but in secrecy, within herself saying her disbelief. Talk about laughing "with" and laughing "at", the quintessential difference between amusement and ridicule, sympathy and empathy, truth and dishonesty. And although God gives Sarah the opportunity to repent and confess her doubt, she doubles down thinking she outwitted the Lord thus cementing the denial of her arrogance. There is something to be said here about the faith of disbelief versus the doubt of superstition. In faith, the meek are humble to the hope of their disbelief, many hail to the degree of their foolery. But if not able to be so foolish as to quiet the doubt of your disbelief then all faith is killed by the arrogance of your doubt and all life is hopeless nothing more than the mere superstition, the accidental luck of the draw, the ideology of nihilism.
