  • Rick's face listening to the beginning of the driver's licence chorus says it all about how good it is

  • I thought the first and last songs were very good for what they are, but not really my cup of tea. I can appreciate them though. The other songs sounded boring, generic, shallow, and soulless. I can't imagine what it would've been like if this was the crap I had to listen to when I was a teenager. Forever 80s, 70s, and 60s for me.

  • So mostly same tired crap, different week/month. And the #1 song is actually pretty good. And the #10 song used chords beyond the regular 1-6-4 combo. Okay, yeah, not gonna get me to listen. Thanks Rick, always astounded by your wealth of knowledge and skill in deciphering and breaking things down! \m/ \m/ Now, can you review some sonically compelling and dynamic stuff like Avatar?? :-) Thx.

  • Rick...thanks for always adding to my music appreciation journey with your informative and in layperson videos. I enjoyed the video of your son's ear training--it's wonderful--definitely a testament to your ear training videos. Most important, I like that you stay current and fuse your love of music and your knowledge of the music industry and music theory for those of us that don't have the time to tackle what's happen in pop music today. You're my "Clark Howard (financial guru) making you my favorite sage of music theory and the music industry. After a day of work, I eagerly look forward to your weekly music theory videos and your take on what's good or bad in the music industry and the direction it's heading. Please don't stop....

  • I disagree. I love how loud the drums are on that Sean Mendes track. With how light and ethereal the rest of the instrumental is, I think it creates this feeling that you're trudging through the mud, boots heavy from the water. Stomping through your self loathing (in the context of the track.) Now you're the producer so if you think it's too loud it might be. But it's my opinion that if the drums weren't as loud that track wouldn't be nearly as good.

  • A car goes by and beeps it's horn. Rick: "That was a G flat minor 3rd. with a suspended 2nd and an augmented 3rd. in the phrygian mode. here it is on guitar"! Genius. Kevin O'Rourke

    Kevin O'RourkeKevin O'RourkeVor 4 Stunden
  • I like the melody of the newer songs but the vibrato overkill by some of the singers just destroys the feel. Its like adding too much salt to a meal in my opinion. And another thing I noticed is how much fuller some of these songs sound when the guitar is played with them. Apart from the chords which obviously sound great, I like the part in Billie Eilish's song where Rick plays the notes along with the bass line (10:00), just added a little bit more "oomph" into it, you know what I mean? sounds really dull without it.

  • Why do most all modern female singers sound like they're a junior high drama diva trying squeeze every drop of manufactured angst out of a raspy, emotionally immature voice? Is it some deluded attempt to make listeners think they're "oh so talented and deep"? It's the American Idol Effect, I guess. These chicks oughta take a listen to Annie Lennox, Carly Simon, Patsy Cline, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Tina Turner or Delores O'Riordan if they want a lesson on this thing called "singing".....

  • I took my kid to see Justin Beiber a few years ago, and in the middle of hos show, he played a half dozen songs alone on guitar. I wish some of the biggest names in pop would start a trend and put out full albums featuring a band (at most) the size of maybe a disco band (at least) a single instrument and combine good pop voices with raw instrumentation. Imagine Ariana Grande, a mic, and a piano playing for 42-45 minutes.

  • I think music makers are starting to wake up to how much influence youtube channels have on what becomes popular. Back in the day, artists would hope to get radio play, now reaction videos and influencers are able to turn viewers on to what they've heard. They should consider that when they're blocking and de-monitizing.
