The Queen's University Talk: The Rising Tide of Compelled Speech

I was invited to Queen's University March 5 to give the inaugural lecture/discussion of the Liberty Lecture series, funded by Faculty of Law alumnus, Gregory Piasetzki (LLB 1980).
Dr. Bruce Pardy ( and I discussed the increasingly frequent requirements for compelled speech that characterize the Canadian sociopolitical landscape.
The entire event was, in a word, surreal. Initial controversy over its acceptability rose to the point where the Dean of the Law School William Flanagan and Principal of Queen’s Daniel Woolf wrote missives in defence of free speech (the former:; the latter: The Queen's University "Human Rights Office" posted a link to the Levana Gender Advocacy Centre and Education on Queer Issues Project "active support" efforts during this event at their “Trans-Positive and People of Colour Positive Chill-In” in Dunning Hall, room 11, where there was coloring pages, music, food, and discussion.
The 900 or so people who attended (who comported themselves admirably and thoughtfully throughout) were subject to a continual 90-minute barrage of noise generated by the protestors, who leaped up on the stained glass windows lining the hall and banged continually on them, breaking one. Inside, we could see shadowy figures dimly outlined through the colored glass. The outside doors were barricaded. One protestor was caught on film saying "Lock them in and burn it down." The din was substantial and ominous, although it is much attenuated in this video, due to the nature of the microphones used, which were designed to pick up speech close at hand.
The protestor who broke the window was arrested, but not before she bit a policeman, attempted to kick the back window out of a police cruiser, and was found to be in possession of a garrotte, a particularly brutal weapon with no defensive utility whatsoever ( The man who cursed so profoundly and eloquently near the beginning of the lecture accosted me and my crew after the talk, and yelled and cursed and threatened at close quarters during our 200-yard walk from the venue to the parkade.
No one who was at this event will forget it.
Not good. Not good at all.

  • That trans person outside, who defends allowing Prof. Peterson to speak, makes an heroic stand, which is allowed by the crowd only because of the way he/she/they/them look(s). Would the mob have been so benign if the presentation were more conventional? In fact, they don't make any effort to read the sign (which supports those who defend "to the death" the individual's right to disagree). Their not getting in this person's face is a textbook example of identity politics-- based shallowly on appearance alone -- proving how antithetical and intellectually lazy the ideologue mind is. Despite it's clumsiness and impedimental nature, the optional pronouns I ran together in addressing the above mentioned person are employed as a measure of respect, but not because I was compelled by fiat to do so, and because it's impossible to know which is preferred, even with the luxury of being able to replay the segment. Respect is not a right, it's an earned privilege.

  • The political system must be updated because it looks extremely corrupted and dysfunctional. Also it is very hard to update it because it is guarded by the corruption and power. As an example, when a journalist asked the candidates for president if any of them was not financed by corporations ,they all accepted they did. The only candidate which wasn't was Trump, but he wasn't a candidate chosen by the people but by the people who benefited the most from him. It should be another way to clarify things because the people are confused and most of them don't understand what is really going on. Smart people should teach the people how to improve the system, giving ideas of how to improve it. Jordan looks very scared of it.

  • I am 48yrs old. I live in the UK. as a teen I visited, as part of a schools programme, communist Russia. at the time I believed wholeheartedly, Marxist theory on equality (specifically (and I think exclusively) with regards to material wealth. in truth I felt extremely guilty about my own families success when I saw how many of my classmates were struggling to get by. when I returned to England I was no longer a communist. I had a realisation of my own patronisation of the poor. in the soviet union, I saw first hand how average members of the public, and those working for the regime, had to criminalise themselves to earn extra, needed, funds. I saw police officers changing dollars and pounds in the street. I purchased badges of office from officials. I purchased items from suitcase wielding free-marketeers! my point is this: I also remember the freedoms we had in the UK. the freedoms that were so important, natural and sadly taken for granted. when I look back at how things were in the '70s, 80,s and 90's and every decade previous, I despair. then I see people like Jordan Peterson. we need to acknowledge that because of his success and formal credentials, he could just have easily taken the opposing viewpoint. thank the gods he didn't. as I watch the recording its not the speaker who warms my despairing heart, its the young people who applaud the speaker. so much rests on their acknowledgement of the tyranny we are under. at least I now have hope for the freedoms of the future. thank you, Mr Peterson.

  • In reference to the last question that's because communist Russia , and communist China both had ties to the western world's central bankers. Fascism was a response to the left and the bankers. Carrol Quigley who was the house historian of the CFR( arguably America's most influential think tank) and he was bill Clinton's mentor. He said there was never a country who had removed the interests if the big banks from the political decision making process as Nazi Germany. Hitler's economic revolution in Germany had reduced financial considerations to a point where they played no role in economic or political decisions. Carroll Quigley

  • I wish the people protesting outside really listened to what JP has been saying all these years and realize what he really stands against. The protesters seem genuinely convinced that sabotaging JP´s lecture is the right and brave thing to do and it seems like such a waste of an opportunity. The opportunity to have a real and enriching debate that benefits us all. As Peterson himself said (paraphrasing): "...impediment of free discourse is not in everyone´s best interest. Because what you want, if you have any sense in your society is everyone´s logos to have the opportunity to clarify the unknown and reconstitute the world, and if you shut that down then you risk getting acces to the unique insights that that individual might bring".

  • Limiting or compelling speech is all well and good if you agree the speech you want to limit is bad and needs to be limited, but what happens if your speech is suddenly found to be offensive and the powers that be have decided you don't need to be heard? What if you disagree with a new law and want it changed but somewhere the hate speech laws expanded to include political discourse and no dissent against the government will be allowed? Would you still vote to limit someone's speech? The C16 law has allowed a Tribunal to judge and fine people who have violated the Gender Speech laws, but that is not enough for them, now they also want to expand the C16 law to Criminally prosecute people for misgendering, how long before your dissent with new laws allows for the criminal prosecution for speaking against the commonwealth? Don't think it can happen, guess again.

This is a classic example of the wholesale rewriting and reframing of public historical perception by Marxist academics to abdicate their ideology of all responsibility for some of the evilest acts of mass-murder in human history. Benito Mussolini was, after all, arguably the most famous historical fascist and yet he was a National Socialist. In fact, all of the most murderous dictators of the last century were socialists and, despite desperate attempts to portray him as a conservative capitalist, so was Adolf Hitler.
