Farewell, LG Mobile: 20 Years Of Doing Phones Differently

From “Lucky Goldstar” to “Life’s Good” to … Last Gasp. That’s the rough trajectory of LG Mobile: a technology brand that over the past twenty years went from a strong second choice for American dumbphone buyers, to the only game in town if you wanted the hottest messaging phones available, to a case study on how to do Android smartphones differently - for better, and for worse.
Join Michael Fisher for a MrMobile retrospective on LG Mobile. From the LG Chocolate to the LG Wing (and the Pradas, Rumors, Flexes and Optimii in between) we’ll re-live LG’s highs and lows, and try to extract a useful lesson from its 2021 withdrawal from the mobile tech space.

This video was produced with the aid of a number of LG Mobile phones, a mixture of review samples from LG Electronics and vintage units purchased by MrMobile/Future plc. Neither LG nor any other company furnished compensation, provided editorial input, or received an early preview of this content.
This video features extensive coverage from Michael Fisher’s days reporting at Pocketnow, used with permission. Visit and subscribe at the link below.

  • I really liked the LG G4 but the main chip would loosen at the 1 year point like clockwork (famous bootloop problem). They made good on replacing it 3 times. The last one has been in use for 2 further years. The V10 had terrible battery life but I keep it for a hifi music device - it has a wolfson DAC that really sounds great.

  • LG's problem wad that it wouldn't stick to a specific name for the flagship phones. The G3 and the V10 where my favorite. They did have overheating chip problems though.

  • Great video, thanks for the memories. Been strictly using LG phones going way back. Really going to miss the simple UI, beautiful screens, cool unique features, incredible cameras and the amazing DACs. Still currently using unlocked unbranded and rooted G7. Tearfully sent from my G7, RIP.

  • Those Verizon LG phones were top notch. I loved my LG Chocolate VX8550 and the "Shine flip." I always loved the LG c1300 with Cingular too. It's a shame they never revived the Chocolate in any form or shape before the closed down shop :(

  • Great video. I feel sad knowing that LG Mobile is gone. I started with the v20 and now am using a v50. Those V series were definitely a great substitute to the flagship juggernauts.

  • I waited the longest time to buy a smartphone. I had been carrying my N95 8GB for the longest time. It wasn't until 2013 that I decided to get an LG G2. Despite it being my first smartphone, I already knew that it was ahead of its time. The fact that I could turn on the screen just by tapping it twice was literally a GAME CHANGER! When my phone was stolen a few years later, I considered getting the G5. But it was a lot more expensive and I was anxious about the reviews. Instead of switching to a Galaxy or a MotoG, what did I do? THAT'S RIGHT - I BOUGHT ANOTHER LG G2! :D That's how good it was! I tracked down a seller and got it. Fast-forward a few years down the line, I had to get a new phone after dropping my G2. I was even ready to get another one. But that was until I saw the G7 at the store. It was EXACTLY like the G2, only better in every way. I've tried comparing it to Samsung phones, and to this day I still can't understand why anyone would choose Samsung over LG. Guess now I won't really have a choice...

  • I had LG C199 (qwerty phone) and LG Optimus VU f100s (android phablet) long before... I actually liked those phones but sadly my C199 got stolen from me and the VU had bootloop problem and battery overheating issue that made me give it away... sadly we will no longer see a successor to the innovative LG WING which I really thought was clever and cool design.

Still getting the LG Wing... we can update Android manually thank you very much 🤪 These are simply stupid marketing people that have selective hearing and big egos. • Honestly, I was surprised to hear that LG was going to stop manufacturing cell phones. Here are the LG phones that I remember having used: LG Optimus G3 LG Tribute 2 LG Stylo 3, 4, and 5 My favourites out the ones I have just mentioned are the LG Stylo 3 and 4 because of their styluses and because their cameras took great pictures and shot awesome videos. The Stylo 5, on the other hand, was my least favourite because it wouldn't let you move any apps to the micro SD card, and that sucked, so I switched to Samsung's Galaxy series starting with the A20, and those phones are much better than the Stylo 5.

  • Using a V30, fantastic device. Absolutely loved it. The camera UI, ESS DAC chip audio features and video features, solid Balanced Design concept without any BS notch or hole, slim and polished feel. Rock stable OS, since 2 years same speed, same smoothness, thankfully I installed Magisk and removed Google bloat and that's it. It just simply works I only wish it had removable battery, going to get it serviced and then use it as a DAP and a souvenir. Very sad of this turn of events. Now all the idiots can shill for other phones which bashing LG hard and enjoy their Chinese phones. Thanks a lot to Michael for this fantastic video.
