Here’s Why PS5 Joysticks Drift (and Why They’ll Only Get Worse)

Mere months have passed since the PS5’s hotly anticipated launch, and already there’s a class-action lawsuit brewing over joystick drift on Sony’s high-tech DualSense controllers. Who could have seen this coming? Well, as it turns out, everyone. Everyone should have seen this coming. Because for all its exciting new tech, the DualSense uses off-the-shelf joystick hardware with a long history of predictable, preventable issues. And now we’ve investigated those issues in excruciating detail.
Sony isn’t the only company to use off-the-shelf joystick modules, but, like Microsoft, they’ve made it difficult to repair this consumable component. Joysticks have a known life expectancy-it’s listed right in a product sheet from the manufacturer. In this video, we head back inside a DualSense controller to see what is failing, and how.

  • A few notes: We started this investigation due to reports of PS5 DualSense controllers drifting, but as we mention at 0:58, these findings apply to most modern joysticks! 3:14 that carbon pad has been scratched with a dental pick. The actual wear to the pads will look different, this was a demonstration since we didn't have a drifting DualSense. 3:50 sprinkling goldfish crackers into your joystick will not fix drift. Don't try this at home. Don't miss Margot the puppy desperately trying to eat Cheez-Its at 5:47

    • A controller redesign with inter-changable Joy-cons would not be cheap sir. The only way to do that is to encase the joy-cons in a housing that can be removed from the joy-stick. Lawsuits would in-sue from children sticking that part in their mouth. Don't blame the Industry not wanting to get sued from Bad Parenting. So if the drifting is caused by Bad Up Keep, then it's Not the Manufacturers fault for players who are Slobs playing with their joy-sticks with dirty hands or eating while playing. It's not their problem by proof of this video.

    • @Matthew Lawton Also, if they made them defective on purpose they would lose money because they have to replace your controller for free if it fails in the first two years.

      Kaiser SoymilkKaiser SoymilkVor Tag
    • @Matthew Lawton first of all: all thumbsticks are soldered no matter the brand of the controller, and secondly: you don't need to desolder the whole thumbstick to fix the drift (as they have shown in the video, and as I did multiple times with success).

      Kaiser SoymilkKaiser SoymilkVor Tag
    • @Deepish Moog Or you can just fix it instead of buying a new one. This is an extremely easy fix, the intimidating part is to learn to disassemble and reassemble the controller.

      Kaiser SoymilkKaiser SoymilkVor Tag
    • @Murilo Araujo You could also have just calibrated the pads, I did that for my 360 drifting controllers and it never drifted again years later.

  • Bruh what. Why cant video game manufacturers make anything of quality these days? I have an original "the duke" Xbox controller and an original SNES controller. Both still work PERFECT. This drifting nonsense, plus the scalpers, has completely turned me off from getting a PS5. Good job Sony.

  • Since they are using the same modules as the PS4 controller, isn't another point of failure the red pentagon shaped piece on the side which wears down when you do a lot of joystick movements while clicking in the joystick causing the controller to not register thumbstick presses. I realize developers have tried to solve this issue by having toggle run options in most games (especially COD), and that you will most likely experience drift before this issue arises. but I've had both drift and issues where you go to R3 and have to hit it 2 to 3 times for it to register, and wonder what the lifespan of that part is. I don't see it mentioned in the Spec Sheet either with a warning saying Don't hold down the joystick and rotate to much or you will regret it like it does for the springs.

While you say that the problem can't be entirely put at Alps, if if was a common part of DS4 controllers, and the drift is evidently a more recent issue, then clearly something they did to the hardware is accelerating wear by exponential magnitudes.

I mean from what I can tell the part itself is a good quality, but yeah, nothing like that is gonna last forever.
